Literacy
Literacy is defined as the ability to effectively use reading, writing, and mathematical skills with age appropriate competence.
Balanced Literacy
Kit Carson Elementary supports the balanced literacy components -- phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language development -- through the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts, appropriate curricula materials and frameworks. Students are provided with a 120-minute reading block. All students receive intervention instruction appropriate to their need within the reading block each day. Oral and Written Language standards are supported with direct instruction that compliments and is integral to the reading instruction. Science and Social Studies CCSS are part of the ELA CCSS. The Instructional Coach is available to assist with the implementation of the district curriculum and requirements.
Math Literacy
Math literacy is also valued at Kit Carson Elementary. Understanding and meaning of mathematical concepts are emphasized as foundational to building efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility. Kit Carson uses the Common Core State Standards for core mathematics instruction. We will continue using Stepping Stones as our core math program. Teachers will also use the Add+vantage Math Assessment Program.
